Recycling is good, it reduces waste and gives materials a second life. But when we get the chance to upcycle, we take it. Because it’s even better.
Recycling breaks things down, often through energy-intensive processes. Upcycling lifts things up. It preserves the original shape, feel, and those small imperfections that carry a story. No melting, no shredding, just clever reuse and honest craftsmanship.
FROM BOTTLE TO DRINKING GLASS
Each Gottaliv candle is poured into an upcycled beer bottle. Once the candle has burned down, you're left with a solid, stylish drinking glass. And the lid? Made from 100% recycled cork, cleaned, reshaped, and pressed into a natural, functional finish.
This is more than a candle. It’s a full-circle product, with a past, a purpose, and a future.

Each candle is handmade by skilled artisans in India, supported by IWAS. Every cut, pour and polish supports fair jobs, local craft, and a cleaner planet. You don’t just light a candle, you support a global story of care, creativity, and conscious living.

A YELLOW FLOWER, A BRIGHTER FUTURE
You might know it. That cheerful yellow flower that paints the fields every spring. It's called rapeseed. Local, light-loving, and full of quiet power. From its seeds, we press a golden oil. And from that oil, we make the wax that lights your home.
At Gottaliv, we use 100% rapeseed wax for our candles. Why? Because it’s one of the most sustainable choices out there. Grown right here in Europe, often just a few fields away, it doesn’t have to travel halfway across the world. No tropical deforestation, no long supply chains. Just a humble flower with a low footprint and a long, clean burn.

Rapeseed wax burns slower than most conventional waxes, giving you more glow for your flame. It’s vegan, biodegradable, and doesn’t release harmful toxins when it burns. Just warm light and a gentle scent.

Every Gottaliv candle is hand-poured in the Netherlands. With care, precision, and intention. We believe in local production, not just for the planet, but for the people too. Small-scale pouring means less waste, better quality, and a more personal touch in every jar.
WHY NOT PARAFFIN?
Paraffin wax is a byproduct of petroleum. It’s fossil-based, energy-intensive to produce, and when you burn it, it shows. Black soot, hidden toxins, and a heavy carbon footprint. Not exactly the kind of warmth we’re after.
AND WHAT ABOUT SOY?
Soy wax sounds green, but look a little closer. Most soy is grown in the US or South America, often linked to deforestation and long transport routes. Even “eco” soy often travels thousands of kilometers before it reaches your candle. We believe sustainability should be local whenever it can.

That’s why we choose rapeseed. It’s grown by local farmers, blooms with biodiversity, and makes a beautifully clean wax. No compromise. No greenwashing. Just a little yellow flower making a big difference.
